Teeth Whitening

Teeth whitening is one of the most sought-for cosmetic dental treatments that offer a quick, affordable, and non-invasive means of restoring the natural shade of your teeth. Although teeth whitening procedures are not a long-lasting solution to teeth discoloration, they are often associated with moderate to satisfactory improvement in your overall dental health. It is often recommended that teeth whitening patients practice frequent teeth maintenance for substantial results. In this post, we will look at the various causes of tooth staining and Leander teeth whitening procedures.

What Causes Tooth Staining?

There are several factors that could result in tooth staining, including:

  • Eating habits. The habitual consumption of acidic foods and deep-colored beverages such as coffee, tea, red wine, and cola can lead to enamel erosion and staining of the teeth.
  • Age. Teeth naturally darken with age due to stain accumulation and frequent wear and tear.
  • Translucency and thinness. Teeth that are more translucent and thinner show less sparkle and respond poorly to teeth whitening bleaching products.
  • Natural color. We are all naturally born with a tooth color that ranges from greenish-grey to yellow-brownish. However, the yellow-brownish shade reacts well with teeth whitening products compared to those that are greenish-grey.
  • Trauma. Falls and other tooth injuries can lead to the formation of large cracks in the teeth, which can gather sizable amounts of debris and stains.
  • Drugs and chemicals. Excessive consumption of fluoride-containing products leads to fluorosis, which is tooth discoloration and faint white marks on the teeth.
  • Excessive grinding. Frequent teeth-gnashing and grinding can cause the biting edges of the teeth to darken or lead to the formation of tiny cracks in the teeth.
  • Smoking habits. Nicotine deposits are brown-like particles that slowly penetrate the tooth structure and cause intrinsic discoloration.

During the Procedure

At Pendleton Orthodontics, our in-office teeth whitening procedures are reliable and often result in satisfactory outcomes. During your teeth whitening procedure, our highly-trained dentists will fit upper and lower dental trays containing a hydrogen peroxide teeth whitening agent in your mouth. We will then carefully cover your lips and gums to protect them from the powerful effects of the teeth whitening gel. The bleaching solution will remain on your teeth for about three intervals of 15-minutes; wherein each 15-minute interval, your practitioner will apply a post-treatment gel on your teeth to minimize any risk of tooth sensitivity.

Post-treatment teeth care

Most practitioners often recommend patients avoid eating certain foods and beverages that may stain their enamel for a period of two weeks post the teeth whitening procedure. Moreover, below are some of the simple aftercare tips that can help maintain your teeth whitening results for a long time:

  1. Make sure to thoroughly brush your teeth before going to bed and at least once during the daytime.
  2. Avoid smoking to prevent tooth discoloration and staining.
  3. Lower your consumption of foods and drinks that may stain your teeth.
  4. Regularly make appointments with your practitioner.
